THAILAND: Web Block Adds Controversies to Laws

Thailand's Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation's (CRES) website blockade has added more controversies to the already-problematic lese majeste and cyber laws and their application, which has in the past few years curbed the people's basic rights and has ushered the society into the climate fear, reports 'The Bangkok Post' on May 6, citing a seminar on 'Critiques on CRES Anti-Monarchy Accusation'.

The CRES in the past two months has already shut down some 200 websites, Thammasat University law lecturer Sawitri Suksri was quoted as saying. Most netizens, however, believe the real figures were higher.

Previously, the Information and Communications Technology ministry and the Department of Special Investigation have already said they blocked 17,000 websites, most of them allegedly deemed against national security.

The anti-cyber crime law, which has been used since it took effect in 2007 in conjunction with the Criminal Code's Article 112, was already a problem since its Article 14(2) and Article 20 provided authorities potential arbitrary power against the free public information gathering, she said.
