CALLS for new stories for AMF's TSUNAMI SERIES: A Year Later Proposal Submission Deadline: October 30, 2005 News crews have long left the areas hit by the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami, but stories still need to be told about how communities are coping, where aid is going, what local initiatives are underway, how women and other groups are dealing with life afterwards, and societies perhaps forever changed by the disaster. In keeping with its aim of encouraging consistent, local and relevant reporting, the Asia Media Forum is now accepting proposals for quality, in-depth stories from tsunami-hit countries and communities for a series to be published on the AMF website by the time of the December anniversary. The series is open to journalists from Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, who would travel to another tsunami-hit country to look at comparisons with their home countries, or show common lessons learned from the disaster. Journalists can choose to write in English or in their local languages. Proposals need to contain: (a) specific story angle to be explored (b) specific place (province, district) to be visited in second country (c) varied kinds of sources to be interviewed (c) letter from editor/publication committing to journalist's participation (d) a resume (e) two samples of work The Asia Media Forum will give priority to the following themes: land rights, aid monitoring, children, livelihoods, gender and rights issues, culture, community responses to disaster, and stories lots of local colour and which seek to bring out under-reported angles. Accepted journalists will produce stories/a set of stories of at least 2,500 words. They would get small grants to travel to another tsunami-hit country for about a week, and an honoraria upon full submission, completion of work. The stories need to be published in the writers' own publication, on the AMF website (www.asiamediaforum.org) and will be distributed to regional and international media and users by Inter Press Service Asia-Pacific. Journalists whose stories were accepted in the AMF tsunami six-month series are eligible for selection in this one-year series.
