Man Tweets While Stuck in Burning Building

Kiran Jonnalagadda, a Twitter user from Bangalore, who was frustrated with the escalating fire crisis in the Carlton Towers in the city and the ineptitude of the firemen on Feb 23 began tweeting from where he was trapped.

He even took pictures of the smoke engulfing the building and posted it on his Twitter account. What's more, he was reporting about the proceedings at the burning building in real time over the micro blogging site.

'Carlton Towers is burning and six of us are trapped inside. The fire's above but there's smoke everywhere. Saw people jump to their death. http://ping.fm/p/DIQQv - Fire at Carlton Towers. Don't call me folks, you can't help. Will keep posting.' Kiran then put up a picture of the buiding with this Tweet - 'waiting to be rescued'. But the most shocking of his tweets was this one - 'http://ping.fm/p/qUno2 - Our rescue ladder. It'll only reach the fourth floor. We're on the fifth.'

Some interesting findings from the Asia-Pacific Social Media Report, launched in June 2010 by leading online researcher, The Nielsen Company:

• Japan posts over 1 million blogs per month, significantly more than any other country.

• Unique visitors to Twitter increased from less than 200,000 to more than 10 million in a year on April 2010.

• Of Japan's internet users, 16 percent use Twitter, compared to 10 percent in the United States.

Burma Authorises Sale of More Mobile Phones

An additional 130,000 mobile phones will be offered for sale in Burma by the end of this year, bringing the total number of mobile phones in the country to about 600,000, according to Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT).

Aung Htun (not his real name) is one of the young video journalists featured in the award-winning feature documentary 'Burma VJ (Reporting from a Closed Country)'.

The Anders Østergaard-helmed film, which has won 40 awards in the international film circuit including the Berlin Film Festival 2009 and the Sundance Film Festival 2009, revolves around the video journalists’ cat-and-mouse game with the Burmese junta while covering the monk-led mass protests in September 2007.
