Investigative Reporting: 'Luxury Item'?

The troubling losses in the field of investigative journalism can not be denied, with many analysts  and observers in the western media saying that  this "slow, expensive undertaking" has become a "luxury item" for many media outlets.

'The Nation' presents a commentary by journalist Jane Mayer that takes a deeper look at the status of investigative journalism and its future. "There used to be dozens of American reporters in Cairo," says Mayer, "and now there are two — one from the 'New York Times', and one from the 'LA Times'."
