ADB Accepting Applications for Journalism Awards

The Asian Development Bank Institute invites journalists from developing Asia and the Pacific to submit published articles written in 2008 or 2009 in connection with the 2009 annual Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA) competition.

The subject matter of the articles should be in line with one of the following four categories:

• Poverty impact of the global financial crisis
• Government responses to the global financial crisis
• Infrastructure development
• Climate change adaptation

An international panel of judges will select the 20 best articles written by journalists who will then be invited in Tokyo for a four-day training programme running from Oct. 20-23, 2009.

Winners of each of the four categories, as well as two special prizes for best development journalist of the year and best young development journalist of the year (under 30 years of age) will be selected from these 20 articles. Awards will be given at the conclusion of the training programme. Special prizes may be given to entrants in the main award categories or to separate entries.

Interested parties may register online by visiting http://www.adbi.org/daja.awards/register.php. When you have registered, you will be sent instructions by email of how to login to your account to submit articles.

Deadline for submission of entries is Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 6 p.m., Tokyo time.

Internet Trends in Japan
Some interesting findings from the Asia-Pacific Social Media Report, launched in June 2010 by leading online researcher, The Nielsen Company:

• Japan posts over 1 million blogs per month, significantly more than any other country.

• Unique visitors to Twitter increased from less than 200,000 to more than 10 million in a year on April 2010.

• Of Japan's internet users, 16 percent use Twitter, compared to 10 percent in the United States.

Burma Authorises Sale of More Mobile Phones

An additional 130,000 mobile phones will be offered for sale in Burma by the end of this year, bringing the total number of mobile phones in the country to about 600,000, according to Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT).

Aung Htun (not his real name) is one of the young video journalists featured in the award-winning feature documentary 'Burma VJ (Reporting from a Closed Country)'.

The Anders Østergaard-helmed film, which has won 40 awards in the international film circuit including the Berlin Film Festival 2009 and the Sundance Film Festival 2009, revolves around the video journalists’ cat-and-mouse game with the Burmese junta while covering the monk-led mass protests in September 2007.
