'Asia Media Report 2009: Missing in the Media'

'Asia Media Report 2009: Missing in the Media', coordinated, produced and published by the Asia Media Forum with the assistance of ActionAid, focuses on how the media throughout Asia reports on marginalised people and communities in their respective societies, from the very poorest countries to the richest.

Featuring articles on topics ranging from press freedom to media commercialisation and the new media, among others, the report focuses the spotlight on the following countries in the region — Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Gulf Region, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Burma, Laos, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Vietnam and Thailand.

The report takes a closer look at the tumultuous state of the media in their quest for the truth amid violence, sensationalism and censorship, such as Sri Lankan journalist Dilrukshi Handunnetti's article, 'Truth, the Second Casualty', Nepali journalist Kunda Dixit's 'Media as Activist, Friend and Soft Target', and Mustafa Nazir Ahmad's piece on Pakistan media, 'When It's Too 'Live' for Comfort'. It also offers a glimpse of the media in young democracies such as Bhutan in Tshering C. Dorji's 'Keeping Well Informed in the Himalayas', or the media's quest for independence and professionalism in Aunohita Mojumdar's piece on Afghanistan titled 'Facing the Bouquets — and the Music'.
